Itinerary
Arrive in Bled, the famous lakeside town with its island church and clifftop castle. Hike to the castle for alpine views and try the local cream cake by the lake.
Today is one of the scenic highlights of the tour, as you cycle from Lake Bled into the Bohinj Valley — a route that beautifully combines riverside cycling, alpine scenery and the peaceful character of Bohinj.
Leaving Bled behind, the ride first takes you through Bohinjska Bela before joining the valley of the Sava Bohinjka River. The route follows the river upstream, with the landscape gradually opening towards Bohinj. Along the way, you pass the area of Grmečica Waterfall, a pleasant natural stop before reaching Bohinjska Bistrica, the gateway to the Bohinj Valley.
From Bohinjska Bistrica, the main route continues towards Lake Bohinj. This extra section is well worth the effort: the lake lies at the foot of the Julian Alps and offers one of the most memorable settings of the day. After enjoying the lakeside scenery, you return through the Upper Bohinj Valley, passing traditional Bohinj villages, open meadows and mountain views before finishing back in Bohinjska Bistrica.
For a shorter day, you can also finish the ride in Bohinjska Bistrica and check into your hotel there, making this stage easy to adapt according to your pace and energy.
In the morning you'll have two options. Your route will take you via the Sorica Pass over the Julian Alps, but if you want to save some time and climbing when the service is operating, you can take a short train ride through the Bohinj tunnel to Podbrdo.
Then you pedal off through a narrow valley and follow the beautiful emerald-green Soča River as it rushes out of the mountains and into the western side of the Julian Alps.
Just before reaching your destination you'll have a chance to dive into its supernatural waters or visit the only monument in the world dedicated to military cooks.
When in Tolmin, you can also visit Tolmin Gorges.
A morning transfer takes you up to the Kolovrat ridge, high above the Soča Valley. Take a moment to enjoy the sweeping mountain views and explore the open-air museum, where preserved trenches tell the story of this former First World War front line.
Your ride begins with a scenic descent towards Kanal, a small town beside the emerald Soča. From here, follow the riverside cycle path to Plave, with the water and wooded hills accompanying you along the valley.
For the route through Goriška Brda, climb from Plave into a landscape of vineyards, orchards and hilltop villages. Medieval Šmartno makes a rewarding stop: wander its narrow lanes, pause for a coffee and enjoy the views across the wine-growing hills before continuing towards Solkan.
Prefer less climbing? From Plave, stay beside the Soča and follow the valley directly to Solkan instead of taking the climb to Šmartno. The river scenery makes this an appealing alternative in its own right.
After leaving the Brda wine region you'll reach "Southern Berlin". The Iron Curtain once split the town of Gorizia between Italy and Yugoslavia.
At the railway station that stands right on the border, one can visit the very interesting Curtain museum.
Cycling further along the border you'll come to the smallest military museum in the world - a historic Yugoslav border outpost.
Overlooking the border is the ancient Kostanjevica Monastery, where the last French King is buried. Turning inland, you'll soon reach the vineyards of the Karst region where you can sample of the best wines.
Today’s ride takes you into the heart of Slovenia’s Karst, where stone-built villages, vineyards and quiet country roads give the landscape its distinctive character.
Your first highlight is Štanjel, a hilltop village of narrow lanes and tightly clustered stone houses. Take time to wander through the old centre and discover the terraced Ferrari Garden, with views across the surrounding countryside.
The route then leads through a succession of small Karst villages towards Sežana, a lively regional town with a long tradition of trade and winemaking. Its botanical garden, beside the historic Villa Mirasasso, offers a possible stop for those who would like a little time off the bike.
Continue to Lipica, the historic home of the Lipizzaner horses, where white fences, tree-lined avenues and open pastures create a memorable setting. If you would like to explore the stud farm, allow time for an optional visit before cycling on to Divača, your stop for the night.
The UNESCO-listed Škocjan Caves offer an optional visit before you leave the Karst. Their vast underground river canyon makes a memorable stop, particularly if you have not visited Postojna Cave earlier in the trip.
The ride then leads towards the Adriatic and the Italian harbour town of Muggia, just south of Trieste. After the changing inland landscapes, arriving by the sea feels like a new chapter of the journey. Explore the small old town, enjoy a gelato by the waterfront or take a boat trip to Trieste if time and the timetable allow.
The tour ends after breakfast in Muggia. Continue independently or reserve one of the optional private transfers listed below.
