Just past the border, the unmistakable charm of Italy welcomes you. This scenic route takes you from majestic mountains to rolling vineyards and all the way to the stunning Italian coast. Along the way, cultural treasures abound. Ready to explore the most beautiful corners of Slovenia and Italy? Let’s go!

As a pre-trip, why not consider our Salzburg to Lake Bled.

Itinerary

Begin your Salzburg to Grado journey at Lake Bled.

This glacial lake is famous for its island church, clifftop castle, and the stunning Karavanke Mountains. Stroll along the western shore for the best views, then enjoy the local cream cake Kremšnita on the eastern side while watching the sunset. This marks the perfect start to your Cycling Alpe Adria adventure.

From Bled to Tarvisio, ride through the peaceful Radovna Valley along a well-maintained cycling path. Pass lush meadows, forests, and traditional villages, stopping at Mojstrana for lunch.

Continue through Kranjska Gora Alpine Resort and cross into Italy. This stage of the Ciclovia Alpe Adria offers gentle climbs and paved roads, leading into the charming alpine town of Tarvisio.

This section of the Ciclovia Alpe Adria is one of the most scenic. Cycle downhill through the Val Canale valley. The route follows the former Vienna-to-Venice railway, crossing viaducts and tunnels.

Your day ends in a charming village at the foot of the Western Julian Alps, highlighting the beauty of Cycling Alpe Adria.

Continue along the Ciclovia Alpe Adria, passing Gemona del Friuli with its stunning Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral. Vineyards appear as you cycle toward Udine.

In the city, enjoy Italian dolce vita—sip coffee in lively piazzas or wander narrow streets showcasing late Gothic and Renaissance architecture.

The final stage of the Ciclovia Alpe Adria passes reed landscapes, canals, and the historic town of Aquileia. Your journey concludes in Grado, a beloved Adriatic beach town with sandy shores, a historic harbor, and narrow alleyways lined with restaurants.

Celebrate completing the Cycling Alpe Adria route with relaxation and authentic Italian charm.

After breakfast, your Salzburg to Grado cycling adventure along the Ciclovia Alpe Adria comes to an end.

First Hand Experience

I have the pleasure to recommend Helia Bikes for an 8 day tour they organized for our group of 13, starting in Bled and ending in Piran. They made sure that we were equipped with all we needed and reassured us to contact them at any point should we have needed help. I was delighted with the quality of my e-bike, and the convenience of a panier. Each hotel had a different arrangement for parking the bikes and charging them with no major issues. Our luggage was delivered without any delays, waiting for us at the end of the ride each day. We had many flavors of towns, guest houses and spectacular gorges and mountains and were delighted by the respectful and friendly welcome everywhere. This region of Slovenia offers a rich history, especially of World War I and it was moving to have tastes of the Trail of Peace. I highly recommend this tour as an introduction to this part of Slovenia, close to the border of Austria and Italy.

Having landed in Ljubljana, and spent two days there, it was an easy drive to Bled and we enjoyed hiking in the area before the start of the biking. I thank everyone at Helia for their friendly competence!
