Via Soča is an 8-day self-guided road cycling tour from Ljubljana to Piran, crossing the Julian Alps and following the emerald Soča Valley towards the vineyards of Brda, the Karst plateau and the Adriatic coast.
The route combines Slovenia's best-known alpine scenery with rewarding road stages on well-surfaced roads. Lake Bled, Pokljuka, Kranjska Gora and the upper Soča are followed by the gentler wine hills and limestone landscapes of western Slovenia, with an optional Vršič Pass loop for riders wanting an additional mountain challenge.
It is suited to road cyclists with solid fitness who are comfortable riding on consecutive days. Easier variants are available on most stages, while luggage transfers, digital navigation, accommodation and Helia's local support make the journey straightforward from start to finish.
Itinerary
Arrive in Ljubljana and settle into your hotel. The old town, the riverfront and the hilltop castle are all within easy walking distance – a pleasant evening to explore before the cycling begins. Ljubljana is one of the most welcoming small capitals in Europe, and worth arriving a day early if your schedule allows.
The route leaves Ljubljana heading north through the Gorenjska countryside, where the Alps begin to take shape on the horizon. The road passes through Kranj – Slovenia's third-largest city, perched on a plateau above the Sava gorge – before climbing to the hilltop village of Jamnik, where the church of St. Primož sits on a grassy ridge with a view back over the valley that makes the detour worthwhile. A descent through the historic market town of Radovljica brings you to Lake Bled: the island church, the cliff-top castle and the encircling ring of peaks are every bit as beautiful as their reputation suggests.
From Bled, the route continues into Triglav National Park. The road to Bohinj follows the Sava Bohinjka river upstream through a quiet valley to Slovenia's largest glacial lake – less visited than Bled, more alpine in character, with the high peaks of the Julian Alps beyond. From Bohinjska Bistrica, the climb to Pokljuka begins: a sustained ascent through national park forest that opens onto a broad highland plateau at 1,300 metres, one of the finest viewpoints in the Julian Alps. The descent off the plateau leads into the Radovna valley – a beautifully glaciated corridor in the heart of Triglav National Park – and flows all the way down to Kranjska Gora at the foot of the mountains.
Leave Kranjska Gora and cross into Italy, following the route towards Tarvisio before turning south to Predil Pass, also known as Predel. The mountain scenery changes as you cross back into Slovenia and descend towards the upper Soča Valley.
Continue towards Bovec, where the river and surrounding peaks set the scene for the next part of the ride. Follow the valley south towards Kobarid, with stretches of turquoise water and limestone scenery providing a striking contrast to the alpine roads at the start of the day.
In Kobarid, you can pause to explore the town or visit its First World War museum if time allows. The final section continues towards Tolmin, where the Soča and Tolminka valleys meet. Settle in for the evening after a varied day linking the mountains with the river valley.
The route leaves the Soča valley and climbs into the Brda hills – Slovenia's warmest wine region, a landscape of south-facing terraces, stone villages and olive groves that feels more Friuli than Alpine. The medieval walled village of Šmartno, tucked into the vines, is a highlight worth a short stop. The road descends to Nova Gorica on the Italian border – once divided by the Iron Curtain, now a shared European city with Gorizia – and then climbs east onto the Karst plateau. The transition is immediate: from warm, sheltered valley to a high, open limestone plain swept by the Bora wind. The landscape changes completely. The riding is different. Both are worth experiencing.
The day crosses two more Slovenian landscapes before crossing into Italy for the night. A descent off the Karst brings you into the Vipava Valley – sheltered and sunny, planted with white wine varieties, with the Nanos ridge forming a natural wall above. The road climbs back to the Karst plateau and passes through Lipica, home of the Lipizzaner stud farm which has been operating on this limestone grassland since 1580. From there, the route crosses into Italy and descends to Muggia: a small Venetian port town on the Gulf of Trieste, a calm overnight stop with the sea already in sight.
The final day follows the Slovenian coast south from Muggia through Ankaran and up to the ridge roads above the Gulf of Trieste – on a clear morning, the view stretches as far as Venice. The hamlet of Pomjan sits at the top of the first climb with a terrace and an uninterrupted panorama over the gulf. The road descends to Koper, the main city of Slovenian Istria, with a handsome Venetian cathedral square at its centre, then continues along the coast through Izola and the Strunjan nature reserve – limestone cliffs above the sea, salt pans below. A short final climb to the hilltop village of Korte, and then the last descent to Piran: a Venetian town on a narrow peninsula, surrounded by the Adriatic on three sides. A well-earned finish.

Getting to Bled
By plane: closest airport is Ljubljana (LJU). Several airlines serve it. From the airport you can travel to Bled by bus (change once, takes about two hrs) or book our transfer: Ljubljana Airport to Bled (faster – 20 min).
By train: Bled has two railway stations: Lesce-Bled on the Villach – Ljubljana mainline, four km away from town center, you’ll need to take a bus or call us, we’ll give you a lift for free. The other is Bled-Jezero on the Jesenice – Nova Gorica sideline only a few trains a day. Two km away from town center, call us and we’ll give you a lift.
By car: take exit Lesce from A1 motorway Ljubljana – Jesenice, Karavanke. Please consult us about parking options.
Back from Piran
By plane: closest airport is Trieste, 50 km NW. We can best arrange you a transfer. Next is Ljubljana (LJU). You can return to Ljubljana by bus, train or our transfer.
By train: Koper railway station is 15 km away from Piran. Trains leave from here to Ljubljana. If you wish to travel onward to Rijeka (Croatia) you need to change in Pivka, however, only a few trains cross the border! There are no train connections to Italy, you’ll need to travel first to Trieste.
By boat: there are ferries operating to Greece from Koper and seasonal sailings along the Slovene coast to Croatia. Also – the daily catamaran service can shorten your trip to Venice!
By car: if your car is in Ljubljana, you can return there by bus or train. Our transfer is available.
