Via Soča is an 8-day self-guided road cycling tour from Ljubljana to Piran, crossing the Julian Alps and following the emerald Soča Valley towards the vineyards of Brda, the Karst plateau and the Adriatic coast.
The route combines Slovenia's best-known alpine scenery with rewarding road stages on well-surfaced roads. Lake Bled, Pokljuka, Kranjska Gora and the upper Soča are followed by the gentler wine hills and limestone landscapes of western Slovenia, with an optional Vršič Pass loop for riders wanting an additional mountain challenge.
It is suited to road cyclists with solid fitness who are comfortable riding on consecutive days. Easier variants are available on most stages, while luggage transfers, digital navigation, accommodation and Helia's local support make the journey straightforward from start to finish.
Itinerary
Arrive in Ljubljana and settle into one of Europe’s most welcoming small capitals. The pedestrian old town, riverside market and castle are all easy to explore on foot.
The evening is free for a relaxed dinner beside the Ljubljanica River and preparation for the first riding stage north towards the Alps.
Leave Ljubljana and ride north through the open countryside of Gorenjska, passing Kranj before climbing towards the panoramic hilltop church at Jamnik. The road then descends through forest and traditional villages towards historic Radovljica.
The final kilometres lead to Lake Bled, with its island church and castle above the water. This varied stage combines fast valley riding, a rewarding climb and an iconic alpine finish.
Ride beside the Sava Bohinjka River to Lake Bohinj, a wilder alpine lake inside Triglav National Park. From the valley, the route begins a sustained climb through forest to the Pokljuka plateau at approximately 1,300 metres.
After the main ascent, quiet roads cross the plateau before a superb descent through the Radovna Valley towards Kranjska Gora. This is the queen stage and requires solid fitness, but the landscapes are among the finest of the tour.
Cross an alpine pass and enter the upper Soča Valley, where the river appears in vivid turquoise below the surrounding peaks. Descend through the valley via Bovec and continue towards Kobarid, known for its First World War history and excellent museum.
The complete stage continues south along the river to Tolmin without a transfer shortcut. Expect a long and highly scenic mountain day with several worthwhile stops.
Leave Tolmin for the softer hills of Goriška Brda, Slovenia’s best-known wine region. Rolling roads pass orchards and vineyards before reaching the medieval walled village of Šmartno.
Descend towards the twin cities of Nova Gorica and Gorizia, once divided by an international border, before climbing onto the open Karst plateau. Stone villages and the Bora-shaped landscape signal a clear change of region.
Descend from the Karst into the sunny Vipava Valley beneath the steep Nanos ridge, then return across limestone country on quiet secondary roads. The stage passes Lipica, home of the historic stud farm founded in 1580.
Cross the border into Italy and finish in Venetian Muggia on the Gulf of Trieste. Its harbour, old square and waterfront provide a relaxed contrast to the demanding inland stages.
Follow elevated roads above the Gulf of Trieste, with wide sea views and, on a clear day, the distant outline of Venice. The route continues through Koper’s Venetian centre and along the coast to Izola.
After the Strunjan cliffs and salt-pan landscape, make the final approach to Piran. The car-free old town, harbour and sea-facing square form a fitting Adriatic finish.

Getting to Bled
By plane: closest airport is Ljubljana (LJU). Several airlines serve it. From the airport you can travel to Bled by bus (change once, takes about two hrs) or book our transfer: Ljubljana Airport to Bled (faster – 20 min).
By train: Bled has two railway stations: Lesce-Bled on the Villach – Ljubljana mainline, four km away from town center, you’ll need to take a bus or call us, we’ll give you a lift for free. The other is Bled-Jezero on the Jesenice – Nova Gorica sideline only a few trains a day. Two km away from town center, call us and we’ll give you a lift.
By car: take exit Lesce from A1 motorway Ljubljana – Jesenice, Karavanke. Please consult us about parking options.
Back from Piran
By plane: closest airport is Trieste, 50 km NW. We can best arrange you a transfer. Next is Ljubljana (LJU). You can return to Ljubljana by bus, train or our transfer.
By train: Koper railway station is 15 km away from Piran. Trains leave from here to Ljubljana. If you wish to travel onward to Rijeka (Croatia) you need to change in Pivka, however, only a few trains cross the border! There are no train connections to Italy, you’ll need to travel first to Trieste.
By boat: there are ferries operating to Greece from Koper and seasonal sailings along the Slovene coast to Croatia. Also – the daily catamaran service can shorten your trip to Venice!
By car: if your car is in Ljubljana, you can return there by bus or train. Our transfer is available.
