Itinerary

First stop Bled, a world-famous town on the shore of a beautiful glacial lake. With its distinctive island church surrounded by towering alpine mountains and the clifftop castle standing guard over the town, Bled is one of Slovenia’s most popular tourist attractions.

Leaving the lakeshore behind, the ride climbs steadily into the forested slopes of Pokljuka and into the heart of Triglav National Park. A scenic traverse across this high plateau leads to Zajamniki—an idyllic alpine pasture where rows of wooden shepherd huts line a narrow ridge with stunning panoramic views. From there, the descent winds through Uskovnica and the sunlit slopes of Senožeta, gradually revealing the first blue glimpses of Lake Bohinj. The day concludes in Bohinjska Bistrica, a peaceful gateway village at the foot of the valley.

This is the shortest stage of the tour, yet one of the most MTB-flavoured. The day begins right away with the climb from Bohinjska Bistrica toward Soriška Planina — a steady ascent that opens gradually into high mountain meadows and wide views. At the top, a welcoming hut offers a well-earned pause before the route continues across the grassy ski slopes and gravel ridges rising toward Možic (1,602 m), a panoramic summit once fortified along the former Rapallo border. The views from here stretch across the Julian Alps and deep into the Baška grapa valley.

From Možic, the route follows the historic mulatjera — a former military mule-track with a gentle, flowing line across the flank of the mountain. Today its surface is mostly earthy and partly grass-covered, shaped into long traverses and steady switchbacks. The descent feels smooth and scenic, guiding you naturally down toward the narrow valley below and into the quiet mountain village of Podbrdo.

The journey continues with a climb onto the northern slopes of Baška grapa via a secluded forest road. Glimpses of steep, wooded valleys unfold through the trees as you pedal in near silence. From Koritnica, the trail meanders through the charming village of Kneža. As you approach the Soča Valley, the landscape shifts—the air warms, hills roll softly, and the turquoise river beckons. End the day in Tolmin, where the Soča and Tolminka rivers meet. Relax with a visit to the Tolmin Gorges or simply soak in the peaceful rhythm of the valley.

Today’s route offers a gentler pace as it follows the brilliant emerald waters of the Soča River upstream. From Tolmin, pedal past the misty Volarje Waterfall and onward to Kobarid—steeped in WWI history and immortalized by Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms. After crossing the historic Napoleon Bridge, the ride continues along quiet gravel paths that hug the river’s edge. Before reaching Bovec, stop to admire the thundering Boka Waterfall—one of Slovenia’s tallest and most awe-inspiring cascades. The day ends in Bovec, a lively alpine town surrounded by rugged peaks and world-class whitewater.

Prepare for one of the most scenic and memorable stages of the journey. Leaving Bovec, you follow the vibrant Soča River into the serene Trenta Valley. The climb begins in earnest with a series of switchbacks leading to the summit of Vršič Pass. Along the route, you’ll pass landmarks and enjoy sweeping views of the Julian Alps. From the top, descend the historic mulatiera and cobbled road, passing the Russian Chapel and following the Pišnica River into Kranjska Gora—a resort town brimming with alpine charm.

The final leg begins along a picturesque cycling path from Kranjska Gora to Mojstrana. A short detour leads to the base of Peričnik Waterfall, where you can walk behind the falling curtain of water. After a forested climb, the trail descends into the glacier-carved Krma Valley, where peace reigns and the air smells of pine. Continue past the glassy Lake Kreda, riding gently beside the Radovna River through wildflower meadows and old-growth woods. Soon, the familiar sparkle of Lake Bled comes into view—welcoming you back with the sense of completion only a true mountain journey can bring.

After breakfast your tour concludes in Bled. Before leaving, you might take a last stroll along the lakeshore, enjoy a peaceful moment at the island church, or simply relax with a coffee as you watch the morning light play across the castle walls. With these final impressions of Slovenia’s mountains and lakes, your journey continues—whether homeward or onward to new adventures.
