Alpine lakes, mountain views and time together

Discover the Julian Alps together on a self-guided cycling holiday linking Kranjska Gora, Bled and Bohinj. Ride through scenic valleys, explore traditional villages and enjoy some of Slovenia’s most beautiful lakes, with time along the way for a picnic, a lakeside break or a refreshing swim.

With stays in three welcoming bases, you can settle in and explore without changing accommodation every day. Quiet roads, cycle paths and non-technical gravel sections bring variety to the riding, while shorter route options let you adapt the longer days to your family’s pace. There are some climbs along the way, and an e-bike can make them more comfortable.

From the clear waters of Zelenci to the lakeside scenery of Bled and Bohinj, this holiday is about enjoying the outdoors together — with luggage transfers and local support taking care of the practical details.

Itinerary

Welcome to the gateway of Triglav National Park — stroll to crystal-clear Lake Jasna or relax with views of the Martuljek group.

Set off from Kranjska Gora along the cycle path towards Zelenci, where clear green springs bubble up beneath a backdrop of mountains. Continue towards the Planica Valley and its Nordic Centre, a striking setting for a break beneath the ski-jumping hills. Optional activities at the centre offer another way to enjoy this alpine playground.

A flexible day for families: turn back after Planica for a shorter outing, with plenty of time for stops along the way. If you would like a longer ride, continue along the cycle path into Italy and take the climb to the Fusine Lakes, also known as the Belopeška Lakes. Their still waters and mountain backdrop are a memorable reward for the extra effort.

Return along the same route to Kranjska Gora. You can round off the day beside Lake Jasna, with a lakeside stroll, mountain views and time to relax together.

Leave Kranjska Gora on the cycle path through the Upper Sava Valley, enjoying open views of the Julian Alps as you make your way to Mojstrana. This first part of the day is a lovely opportunity to settle into an easy rhythm and stop wherever the scenery invites you.

For families who prefer to stay on the cycle path, a transfer from Mojstrana to Bled can be arranged in advance. This makes it possible to enjoy the valley ride without continuing over the hill into Radovna.

If you ride the full stage, an optional detour from Mojstrana takes you towards Peričnik Waterfall. Then a short climb and descent bring you into the peaceful Radovna Valley. Follow the scenic valley road between meadows, woodland and mountain slopes until you reach Lake Bled, where the island church and clifftop castle provide a wonderful welcome.

Today is yours to shape, with several ways to explore the countryside around Bled. Families can choose a shorter ride near the lake or head towards Radovljica, a charming historic town known for its chocolate, honey and rich beekeeping tradition. Stroll through the beautifully preserved old town, discover its sweet local flavours and pause for a relaxed break in the old square.

For a longer loop, ride from Bled towards the Završnica Valley beneath the Karavanke Mountains. Continue through Vrba, the birthplace of Slovenia’s poet France Prešeren, and on to Radovljica. Village lanes, open fields and mountain views give the day a varied, unhurried character.

Return towards Bled via the Šobec area, with another opportunity to pause by the water before finishing back at the lake. Choose the version that suits your energy and make the most of the stops along the way.

Slow down and enjoy Bled at your own pace. Spend the morning beside the lake, find a favourite viewpoint or take a traditional pletna boat to the island. Bled Castle offers a different perspective from its clifftop setting, while a slice of the famous cream cake is a good reason to linger at a lakeside café.

If you feel like stretching your legs, make time for Vintgar Gorge, where walkways lead past the clear waters of the Radovna River towards Šum Waterfall. Plan your visit around the gorge’s opening times and entry arrangements.

Keep the day as active or relaxed as you wish: a swim at a designated bathing area, a gentle walk or simply time together by the water. Visits and activities can be chosen to suit your interests and pace.

Two contrasting routes lead you from Bled into the Bohinj Valley today. Choose the experience that best suits your family, riding confidence and appetite for adventure.

The Pokljuka option: a morning shuttle takes you and your bike up to the forested plateau. Ride through cool spruce woods and open pastures, passing the traditional shepherd huts of Zajamniki, lined along a ridge with far-reaching mountain views. Continue via Uskovnica before descending towards Lake Bohinj. This more adventurous gravel route offers a special glimpse of the high alpine countryside.

The direct valley option: leave Bled through Bohinjska Bela and follow the Sava Bohinjka upstream towards Bohinjska Bistrica. Riverside cycling, woodland and glimpses of the surrounding mountains make this a gentler choice for families. The area around Grmečica Waterfall offers a pleasant natural stop along the way.

From Bohinjska Bistrica, you can continue to Lake Bohinj and return through the Upper Bohinj Valley, passing traditional villages and open meadows. Alternatively, finish in Bohinjska Bistrica and leave more exploring for tomorrow.

Follow the cycle path from Bohinjska Bistrica towards Lake Bohinj, with meadows, village scenes and mountain views along the way. Arriving at the lakeshore, take your time: the clear water and dramatic alpine backdrop make this a place to enjoy rather than hurry through.

Choose how to spend your lakeside time. You might take a walk, swim in a designated bathing area, enjoy a boat trip or settle down for a picnic with a view. There is plenty of scope for a relaxed family day, with cycling as just one part of the experience.

For more time on the bike, continue towards Savica Waterfall, with the option of leaving your bike and walking to the waterfall. Return through the Upper Bohinj Valley, linking traditional villages, open fields and mountain scenery before finishing back in Bohinjska Bistrica.

The tour ends after breakfast in Bohinj. Continue independently or reserve one of the optional private transfers listed below.

Bike damage waiver

A standard damage waiver is already included with every Helia rental bike. For accidental damage during normal, responsible use, your excess is €50 for a touring bike or €150 for an e-bike, gravel, road or mountain bike.

The optional waiver upgrade reduces this excess to €0. It costs €25 for a touring bike or €50 for other bike types, per bicycle for the full tour.

For qualifying theft of a securely locked bike, the upgrade limits your liability to €150 for a touring bike or €300 for other bike types. The bike must be secured as specified in our terms, the theft reported promptly to Helia and the police, and a copy of the police report supplied.

The waiver does not cover loss, improperly secured bikes, intentional damage or gross negligence, riding under the influence, unapproved use, missing accessories, or continued riding with an obvious technical fault. Full conditions and exclusions apply.

For specially arranged bikes supplied by a rental partner, please ask us to confirm the applicable waiver terms.
