Itinerary
Welcome to Lake Bled—where fairytales meet alpine adventure. This picture‑perfect destination, with its glacial lake, island church, and cliff‑top medieval castle, is the ideal starting point for your journey. After checking in, the day is yours to explore at your own pace. Stroll the lakeside promenade, hike up to Mala Osojnica for one of the most iconic views in Slovenia, or simply unwind with a coffee and a slice of Bled’s famous cream cake.
Eager to get riding? An optional warm‑up loop (28 km, 460 m ascent) introduces you to Bled’s highlights and hidden corners. You’ll ride beneath the towering cliffs of Bled Castle, past the Olympic Rowing Centre, and through forest trails to the village of Bohinjska Bela. The route then follows the tranquil Sava Dolinka River and cuts across meadows with panoramic views of the Karavanke Mountains. The ride continues through Koritno, then climbs gently through peaceful woods to the scenic Church of St. Catherine—offering stunning vistas over Bled and its surrounding peaks. A leisurely descent brings you back to town, where you can cap off the day in the magical setting of Bled Castle.
Leave the calm lakeshore and climb into the heart of Triglav National Park, where peaceful alpine plateaus and sweeping vistas await. The route rises through Gorje into the secluded Radovna Valley, a forested corridor flanked by high peaks. You’ll follow the crystal‑clear Radovna River to Lake Kreda, a serene turquoise pool tucked between meadows and pines.
From here, the day’s main ascent begins toward the Pokljuka Plateau. As the elevation increases, the forest thins and the views expand. A short, easy descent leads to Zajavornik—a tranquil alpine pasture dotted with traditional shepherd huts—before optional detours to Goreljek or the Pokljuka Sports Centre for refreshments. The ride continues past the Blejsko Barje wetlands and across Belska planina, opening to wide‑angle horizons and quiet, open woodland.
The descent is flowing and fun, with a section that traces the line of the old Zatrnik ski slope through open forest. Near journey’s end, a panoramic ridge reveals an unforgettable sweep over the Bled Basin, the Karavanke Range, the Jelovica plateau, and even the distant Ljubljana Basin. From here, coast back to the peaceful shores of Lake Bled—a classic alpine day that blends steady climbs, pastureland, and picture‑perfect viewpoints.
The route begins in Bled, passing through Podhom and over the Radovna River before climbing toward Zgornje Laze. The gravel ascent winds through spruce woods and open glades, leading to the crest of Mežakla. Along the way, you can pause at the cool mouth of Snežna Jama, detour to Planina Obranca (1,035 m) for quiet pasture views and a small memorial, and step up to Škrbina (1,210 m) for sweeping vistas over the Upper Sava Valley, Jesenice, and the Karavanke.
The trail continues along the ridgeline past Zakop, crosses Planina Ravne and Planina Strmole, with views back toward the Radovna Valley and Lake Kreda, before descending through Krnica and returning to Bled on peaceful forest paths and village lanes.
Ride into the tranquil wilderness of the Jelovica Plateau, a world of quiet forests, gravel climbs, and sunlit pastures. From Bled, follow the Sava Bohinjka through Ribno to the first forest ascent and the peaceful hut at Telež. Continue across meadows to Vodiška planina, where the final approach flows along a smooth singletrack—an easy highlight. Beyond, the route threads past Martinček and Selska planina, opening vistas toward Mount Triglav and the Julian Alps. An optional short detour leads to the calm Rovtarica Meadow—a lovely spot for a simple picnic—before a long descent to Kupljenik and a gentle return through Selo and Mlino back to the shores of Lake Bled.
Optional detour: ride to Babji Zob (“Hag’s Tooth”), a dramatic rocky viewpoint overlooking the Sava Valley, Julian Alps, and Lake Bled.
This ride offers the most stunning views of the entire tour. From Bled, climb through Podhom, passing high above the dramatic Vintgar Gorge and pausing at peaceful Završnica Lake. The ascent continues to Zabreška Planina, where a ridgeline opens to sweeping vistas of the Julian Alps, Lake Bled, and the distant Kamnik–Savinja Alps—a moment to remember.
Further along, you reach Valvasorjev Dom, a welcoming mountain hut beneath mighty Mt. Stol, the highest peak of the Karavanke. After a well-earned rest and perhaps a traditional meal, the route carries you across to Potoška Planina before beginning a long, flowing descent. Forest trails and gentle country roads guide you back past Završnica Lake and into Bled, closing the day with a perfect alpine panorama.
Your final ride is a cultural and scenic loop through the valleys and villages of Gorenjska—gentle in elevation but rich in history and charm. From Bled, a quiet climb leads through Piškovca onto the old Cesarska cesta (“Emperor’s Road”), guiding you into Begunje na Gorenjskem, home of folk legends Ansambel Avsenik. Pause for coffee, visit their museum, or enjoy a traditional lunch. Continue past the ruins of Grad Kamen and graceful Drnča Manor, with a short detour to the shaded Peračiški slapovi waterfalls.
A gentle ascent brings you to Brezje, Slovenia’s national pilgrimage site, where the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians overlooks the rolling countryside. Quiet lanes then lead through Grofija and Kamna Gorica, a village of ironworking heritage, before crossing the Fux Footbridge into Radovljica, one of Slovenia’s best-preserved medieval towns. The loop ends with an easy ride through Lancovo and Bodešče, returning to Lake Bled—closing the tour with a perfect blend of culture, landscapes, and tradition.
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast before saying farewell to Lake Bled and the unforgettable landscapes of Gorenjska.
