Scenic MTB Adventure for Everyone – Julian Alps & Alpine Lakes

An easy-going cycling holiday through Slovenia’s most beautiful alpine landscapes. Ride from Kranjska Gora to Bled and Bohinj on a relaxed route connecting glacial lakes, turquoise rivers, forest trails, and peaceful pastures.

Daily stages are short and mostly non-technical, ideal for e-bikers, leisure MTB riders, and active families. With three overnight bases and plenty of time to explore, this is the Julian Alps at their most serene—quiet, scenic, and unforgettable.

Itinerary

Welcome to Kranjska Gora, nestled at the foot of the Julian Alps and the gateway to Triglav National Park—Slovenia’s only national park and a sanctuary of alpine beauty. Here, towering peaks, quiet meadows, and alpine traditions set the tone for your journey. After checking into your hotel, the day is yours to settle in and explore. Stroll through this charming mountain town, take a walk to Lake Jasna, known for its crystal-clear waters and iconic bronze ibex statue, or unwind in a local café with views of the Martuljek mountain group. Tomorrow, the adventure begins—but today, let the calm of the valley welcome you.

Your ride begins with a peaceful roll from Kranjska Gora to Zelenci, the emerald-green spring that marks the source of the Sava River, located within Triglav National Park. Pedal past the wetlands of Ledine, then briefly cross into Italy to explore the Fusine Lakes and the surrounding Torbiera di Fusine Nature Reserve—a protected wetland rich in biodiversity. A gentle forest climb leads you around the lakes’ tranquil shores—a serene alpine jewel nestled beneath dramatic limestone cliffs, with stunning views toward Mount Mangart, one of the most iconic peaks in the Julian Alps. Circle the lakes and pause by their shores before returning to Slovenia via Rateče, a traditional village known for its wooden hayracks and panoramic mountain views. A side trip into the Planica Valley brings you to Tamar, ringed by towering peaks and home to sky-piercing ski jumps. Finish the ride with a loop around Lake Jasna, where shimmering reflections of the surrounding mountains mark the end of a stunning day in the northern reaches of Triglav National Park.

Today’s ride connects some of the most picturesque corners of the Julian Alps, much of it winding through the eastern edges of Triglav National Park. Follow the Sava River through Gozd Martuljek, where a forest trail leads to the hidden Martuljek Waterfalls—tucked in steep gorges. Continue through the valley to Mojstrana and the thundering Peričnik Waterfall, where a short walk lets you stand behind its 52-meter cascade. Mojstrana marks the entrance to the three iconic glacial valleys of Vrata, Kot, and Krma, each reaching deep into the heart of Triglav National Park. Just before the climb into Krma Valley, you may also stop at the Slovenian Alpine Museum in Mojstrana. The route climbs gently into Krma Valley, the most accessible of the three, known for its open alpine pastures and striking views of the surrounding peaks. Nestled within this valley is Kovinarska koča, a welcoming mountain hut amid towering peaks and meadows. Descend into the Radovna Valley, where the Radovna River winds through meadows and forested slopes—still within the park boundaries—passing Lake Kreda and wide alpine pastures. Glide through Krnica, then roll downhill to the shimmering shores of Lake Bled—a perfect end to a day of natural highlights.

Note: This is the longest day of the tour, but it can be shortened to 38 km (+310 m) by skipping Peričnik or Krma Valley. A smart option in case of bad weather, limited time, or lower fitness.

Leave the lively energy of Bled behind as you cross over the Sava Dolinka River into a peaceful landscape of fields and forests, with views back toward the Julian Alps and nearby Triglav National Park. A short climb brings you to the Završnica Valley, where a tranquil reservoir rests beneath the steep Karavanke Mountains. Ride through the villages of Žirovnica and Vrba—the birthplace of Slovenia’s national poet, France Prešeren. Continue into the pine-scented woods of Šobec, stopping at the spring-fed Lake Šobec, beloved for its calm waters and scenic clearing. Return to Bled via Koritno and Ribno, where sunlit hayracks and mountain views fill every frame. The loop completes with a quiet circuit around Lake Bled, tracing its northern shoreline back to your hotel—a gentle, rewarding ride filled with quiet beauty.

Today’s main highlight is the Vintgar Gorge—a narrow, fairytale-like canyon carved by the emerald Radovna River. It’s just a short 4 km ride from Bled—just a short and easy bike ride away. From the entrance, a wooden walkway winds through the gorge, past rushing waterfalls, turquoise pools, and towering rock walls, eventually leading to the dramatic Šum Waterfall. The path through Vintgar Gorge is about 1.6 km long and forms part of a scenic walking loop that continues through meadows and past the hilltop church of St. Catherine above Zasip—takes around 2 to 3 hours on foot. (Vintgar Gorge is walk-only—bikes must be left at the entrance.). Back in Bled, the afternoon is yours to enjoy at your own rhythm. Glide across the lake in a traditional pletna boat to the island church, climb up to Bled Castle for sweeping panoramic views, take a refreshing swim from one of the lakeside piers—or simply find a quiet corner, order a coffee or a slice of cream cake, and soak in the timeless alpine atmosphere.

Today begins with a morning shuttle transfer from Bled to the Pokljuka Plateau—an alpine world of spruce forests, open pastures, and cool mountain air. (The transfer includes bikes and begins at your hotel after breakfast.) From the starting point near Goreljek, you set off on gravel roads that wind through quiet woods and sunlit clearings, passing traditional summer pastures where time seems to stand still. As the plateau opens up, you reach Zajamniki—a long, narrow ridge where wooden shepherd huts line the trail in a single row, framed by wide views toward the Julian Alps. It’s a place of silence and simplicity, where only the breeze and the sound of cowbells fill the air. From here, the route continues gently across rolling alpine terrain to Uskovnica, another peaceful mountain pasture nestled between meadows and forest edges. It’s a perfect place for a pause before the descent begins—long, flowing, and never too steep. As you drop into the Upper Bohinj Valley, the landscape transforms: dense forests give way to open farmland, and the cool scent of pine is replaced by the freshness of the alpine air. Ride past Srednja vas, then follow a quiet stream all the way to the shores of Lake Bohinj. Framed by mountains and still untouched by mass tourism, the lake greets you with its clear waters, gentle quiet, and a sense of arrival. This is a peaceful corner of the Alps—an ideal place to pause, reflect, and breathe in the stillness.

Your final riding day begins by leaving the calm of Lake Bohinj behind, pedalling through tranquil meadows and forest-lined tracks on your way toward Bohinjska Bistrica. From the village, the route joins a cycling path that follows the Sava Bohinjka upstream, offering open views and gentle pedalling as you gradually return toward the lake. The first climb begins in Stara Fužina, where a winding forest road leads into the Voje Valley. At the end lies Koča pri Slapu Mostnice—a mountain hut tucked above the gorge—and just beyond it, the cascading waters of Mostnica Falls. After the visit, you return the same way to the lakeshore. The second half of the ride circles the southern shore of Lake Bohinj, climbing steadily toward the entrance of Savica Waterfall. A short walk leads you to one of Slovenia’s most famous alpine sights, where water bursts from a narrow cliff in a dramatic drop toward the gorge below. A final descent into Ukanc and a gentle roll along the lakeside bring you back to your hotel—legs a little tired, but the memories still fresh.

Note: This day can be shortened by skipping the climb to Mostnica and staying along the main lakeside route instead (33km, +430m)

After breakfast, your tour comes to an end. Whether you're heading home or continuing your travels, take one last look at the calm waters of Lake Bohinj and the peaks that watched over your journey. From glacial springs to forest ridgelines, from quiet villages to alpine pastures—this week has taken you deep into the heart of Slovenia’s natural beauty.
